How does a GroupTogether collection work?

A GroupTogether collection is an online whip round: you set it up, people chip in by card, and the money goes to a gift or to the recipient. Here is how each step works, what it costs in fees, the minimum and maximum amounts, and how withdrawal works, using the figures on GroupTogether’s own pricing pages.

Quick answer

You create a collection, share the link, and contributors pay by card; on its Australian pricing page in October 2026, GroupTogether charged contributors a 1.8% fee and a flat 2% fee on withdrawal, with a $20 AUD minimum. When the collection reaches that minimum, the group card that goes with it is free. In the US the contributor fee was 2.9% + $0.30, with a $2,000 cap per collection.

Step by step

Collections follow a simple pattern. The organiser sets up the collection, usually alongside a group card. A link goes to the group, by email invitation or shared in a chat. Each person who wants to chip in pays an amount by card. When the collection closes, the money is either withdrawn or spent on an eGift card for the recipient.

The fees, in numbers

On the Australian pricing page: a 1.8% contributor fee on each contribution and a flat 2% fee on withdrawal. A worked example: if fifteen workmates each put in $20, the collection is $300. The contributor fee on each $20 is 36 cents. If the full $300 is withdrawn, 2% is $6.

On the US pricing page: a contributor fee of 2.9% + $0.30, so a $20 contribution carries 88 cents. The US page also notes a 2% fee on Amazon, Target and Walmart eGift cards only. The UK pricing page we read did not show collection fees, so check with GroupTogether if you are in the UK.

Minimums and limits

The minimum to collect is $20 AUD on the Australian page and $20 USD on the US page. Reaching it is what makes the group card free. The US page also lists a maximum of $2,000 per collection, which matters for a big retirement collection across a whole company.

GroupTogether’s Australian collections are for Australian residents and run in AUD, which is convenient for local teams.

How the Thankeeu gift pot compares

Thankeeu builds the gift into the card itself. Signers chip in any amount by card on the same page where they write, record a voice note or upload a photo. Fees are shown to each contributor before they pay. The recipient claims the total to their bank account or as a digital gift card.

Contributions are taken in GBP, EUR, CAD or USD depending on the country. For Australia, Thankeeu cannot charge in AUD yet, so contributions are in US dollars. That is a genuine point in GroupTogether’s favour for Australian teams. The Thankeeu advantage is in what comes with the gift: voice notes on every card, video and the Memory Movie on Most Popular, and delivery in the recipient’s own time zone.

Common questions organisers run into

The first is timing. A collection that closes the morning of the farewell leaves no time to buy the present, so set the end date a couple of days earlier and tell people when it is. The second is who pays the fees. On GroupTogether the contributor fee is added for the person paying, and the withdrawal fee reduces what comes out at the end; plan the gift around the net amount, not the headline total.

The third is the people who prefer cash. Some workmates will hand you a note rather than pay online. Keep a short list and add it to the gift separately; there is no need to force everyone through the link. And the fourth is privacy: most people would rather not see who gave what. Say at the start that amounts are up to each person, and keep any list of contributions to yourself.

Tips for running any office collection

Suggest an amount, but make it optional; some people give more, some less, and nobody should feel watched. Close the collection a day or two before the event so there is time to buy or choose the gift. Say in the message what the money is for, whether it is a voucher, a bottle or a donation to the leaver’s favourite charity. And thank contributors afterwards: a short note with a photo of the gift goes a long way.
