Is GroupTogether free?

GroupTogether advertises a free option, and it is real, but it comes with conditions. This page explains exactly when a GroupTogether card costs nothing, what you pay when it does not, and who actually covers the fees on a free collection.

Quick answer

Partly. On its Australian pricing page in October 2026, GroupTogether listed a group card at $5.50 AUD, but the card is free when you run a money collection with it and collect at least $20 AUD. That collection is not fee free: contributors pay a 1.8% fee and a flat 2% fee applies when the money is withdrawn.

When GroupTogether costs nothing for the organiser

GroupTogether’s Australian pricing page lists a “Group Card + Money Collection” option that is free once the collection reaches the minimum of $20 AUD. In other words, if you are already collecting money for a farewell present and the group puts in at least $20, you do not pay for the card.

Sending eGift cards is also listed as free, with a 1.8% service fee for certain payment methods. On its US page, the same free card with collection applies at a $20 USD minimum.

Where the fees go instead

Free for the organiser does not mean free for everyone. On the Australian page, each contribution carries a 1.8% contributor fee, and a flat 2% fee is charged on withdrawal. If twenty workmates chip in $10 each, the collection of $200 attracts a few dollars in contributor fees, and the withdrawal fee comes off the total before it reaches the recipient or the gift.

In the US the page listed a contributor fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per contribution and a maximum of $2,000 per collection. These are normal payment processing costs, and GroupTogether is clear about them. It is simply worth knowing that “free” here means the card fee is covered by running a collection, not that money moves at no cost.

When you pay for the card

If you only want a card, with no collection, it was listed at $5.50 AUD. Packs bring the price down: 5 cards for $25, 10 for $45, 25 for $99, 50 for $189 and 100 for $349. In the UK the card was £4.50 and in the US $5.50 USD.

For a plain card in Australia, that is good value, and cheaper than Thankeeu’s Classic card once our US dollar price is converted. We would rather say so plainly.

How Thankeeu’s free start is different

Thankeeu does not tie a free card to a collection. Anyone can create a card, invite the group, collect messages, photos, GIFs and voice notes, and set up a gift pot without paying. You pay once when you send, at the live price shown on this page. If you add a gift pot, fees are shown to each contributor before they pay, and the recipient claims the money to their bank or as a digital gift card.

For Australian cards, Thankeeu charges in US dollars and gift contributions are also in US dollars, which is a real drawback next to GroupTogether’s AUD collections. What you get in return is voice notes on every card, video and a Memory Movie on Most Popular, and delivery scheduled in the recipient’s own time zone.

A quick worked example

Picture a team of twelve in Brisbane organising a farewell. On GroupTogether they set up the card with a collection, and ten people chip in $15 each. The collection reaches $150, well over the $20 minimum, so the card costs nothing. Each contributor pays the 1.8% fee on top of their $15, and when the organiser withdraws the $150, the flat 2% fee comes off. The farewell gift is a little under $150, and nobody paid for the card.

On Thankeeu the same team creates the card for free, collects messages and voice notes, and turns on the gift pot. They pay once for the card when they send it, and each contributor sees the fee before chipping in. The difference is that the card itself has a price, and in exchange it carries voice notes, and on Most Popular, video and a Memory Movie.

Neither route is wrong. It depends whether the money or the messages matter more to your group.

Which one should you use?

If you are collecting money anyway, the GroupTogether free route is hard to argue with on cost. If the card is the main event and you want workmates to speak, share video and get a short film at the end, Thankeeu is worth the price of the card. Both are quick to try; Thankeeu costs nothing until you send. For a fuller comparison see our GroupTogether alternative page.
