Is Thankbox free?
People ask this because Thankbox lets you start without paying. That part is true. Sending is not free, and neither is the gift collection. Here is exactly where the money comes in, from Thankbox’s own pricing page, and how the same question works on Thankeeu.

Quick answer
Thankbox is free to start but not free to send. Its pricing page in October 2026 said you can create a Thankbox in seconds without registering and only pay when you send it: $5.99 for Classic or $9.99 for Premium. Each gift contribution also carries a processing fee.

What is free on Thankbox
Creating the card, inviting colleagues and letting them sign. Thankbox says there is no need to register to start, which is genuinely convenient when someone has asked you to organise a leaving card at short notice. Signing is free for colleagues.
What you pay for
When the card is ready to send, you pick a plan. Classic was $5.99, with unlimited messages, photos and GIFs, 5 fonts and a gift limit of $400. Premium was $9.99, adding video, premium fonts, slideshow playback, your own design and a $1,000 gift limit. Voice notes are listed with Premium, Packs and the Team plan.
If you collect a gift, each contribution has a fee: 1.1% + £0.17 in pounds, 2.5% + €0.17 in euros or 2.9% + $0.19 in dollars. That fee pays for card processing and fraud checks, which every service has to cover somehow.
Why “free to start” is a fair model
It lets you see the finished card before spending anything. If only three people sign, you can decide not to send it. Thankeeu works the same way, and we think it is the right model for the organiser, who is often paying personally.
What differs is what the paid card includes. On Thankeeu, the Classic card already has voice notes alongside photos and GIFs, and every card has unlimited signers. Most Popular adds video, the Memory Movie and up to five co admins.
A worked example for a UK leaving card
Say twenty five colleagues sign a leaving card and twenty of them put £10 each into the whip round. On Thankbox, starting the card and signing cost nothing. If nobody posts a video, Classic at $5.99 is enough, though the $400 gift limit is worth keeping in mind for a big collection. Each £10 contribution carries the listed fee of 1.1% + £0.17, about 28p, so the twenty contributions add roughly £5.60 in fees between them.
On Thankeeu the same card is also free to start and to sign. When you send it, you pay once at the live price in pounds shown on this page, and voice notes are already included. Each contributor sees the gift pot fee before paying, and the leaver claims the money to their bank or as a digital gift card.
In both cases, the organiser can collect every message first and decide at the end. That is the main point of free to start: no risk of paying for a card that only three people signed.
Free alternatives, and their trade offs
There are free ways to make a group card: a shared document, a slide deck everyone edits, or a paper card passed round the office. They cost nothing, and for a small team in one room a paper card is still lovely. The trade offs are familiar to anyone who has tried them: the shared document gets messy, someone deletes another person’s message by accident, remote colleagues are left out, and there is no simple way to collect money.
Paid group card services exist to solve exactly those problems. The question is less “is it free” and more “what am I paying for when I send it”. On Thankeeu, the answer includes unlimited signers, voice notes, photos and GIFs on every card, scheduled delivery in the recipient’s time zone and a gift pot, with video and a Memory Movie on Most Popular.
Free for workplaces?
Thankbox’s Team plan offers unlimited Thankboxes; the price was not shown on the page we read. On Thankeeu, a free company account through Thankeeu for Teams lets a company create cards for colleagues with no card fee, and a paid plan automates birthdays and work anniversaries from HR systems such as Personio and HiBob.
Leaving cards without the stress
Whichever you pick, start early, share one link in the team chat, and send a reminder two days before. Thankeeu reminds anyone who opened the link but did not sign. Schedule the card for the last afternoon, in the leaver’s own time zone if they are moving abroad. Our leaving card for a colleague guide has wording ideas.
Who actually pays
On both services, colleagues sign for free, the organiser pays for the card when sending, and anyone who chips in to the gift covers a small processing fee on their contribution. Some offices split the card cost into the whip round so the organiser is not out of pocket. That works on either service.
